The MYE Wilderness Challenge Program is a multi-element, experiential program focusing on leadership, self discovery and sustainability. In 2008 there are 60 places available to interested, motivated, qualified people ages 15-18 from Southern California, South central Montana, and selected national locations.

Each course typically includes six-eight days of wilderness backpacking, a four day canoeing trip; three days of service learning and active service projects; work with horses on the Grizzly Creek Ranch; development of leadership and teamwork skills; and personal challenges that will stretch your understanding of who you are and what is possible. Underpinning all our program components are the concepts and practice of sustainability and ‘Leave No Trace’ ethics.

You will share your experiences, exploration, challenges with a small group of 10 other adventurers and two of MYE’s experienced staff. You will hike the high peaks of Yellowstone National Park or the Gallatin Forest, travel the cold, clear rivers of Montana, earn service hours, and, in the end understand the true meaning of contributing to something larger than yourself. This program will give you the opportunity to learn more completely who you are, who you want to be, and how to get there. We provide the vehicle, all you have to do is to set your sights on your destination and take the drivers seat.

All MYE courses rely on you to give your best to your teammates from Day 1 through Day 25. You will learn the techniques of effective communication, how to work with others to accomplish a shared task, how to work through conflict and challenges in a way that supports everyone, and, most importantly, how to live with compassion and understanding for yourself, others, and our shared environment. We are all in it together!

In summer 2008 MYE will offer six 25 day courses in our Summer Wilderness Challenge Program.

To get the most out of the program you should aim to get yourself to a solid level of fitness. On the back-packing component you will be walking 5+ hours a day in the back-country, carrying a pack weighing 30-55 pounds; and on the canoeing expedition you will be paddling a laden canoe (with a partner) for approx the same amount of time. Aerobic and upper body fitness will make all of the activities you do more enjoyable. If you are selected for our program and think you need to improve your fitness, talk to your PE teacher or one of our staff about a suitable program to help you with your fitness goals.

Wilderness Challenge groups spend four days on a river expedition, so water confidence is very important for your safety and that of your team-members. The minimum swimming level for participants is the ability to float, and dog paddle to a given point (at least 25ft).
