The Leadership Lab takes exceptional MYE graduates
to the next level. The aim of this program is to help students
further develop a sense of who they are, what they value and
how they can use their strengths and skills to have a positive
impact in their world and reach their goals.
In 2009 there will be two Leadership Labs offered in Montana.
Successful applicants will have demonstrated an ongoing commitment
to their own learning and development in one or more of the following ways - have attended MYE Life Skills events; be involved in community
service projects or groups, and/or school and sporting activities.
The Leadership Lab has two phases – one
is a 25 day course based in Tom Miner
Basin. This phase
has an outdoor pursuits focus and includes a mix of theoretical
workshops, practical sessions, outdoor activities and an extended
expedition. Participants can expect to explore sustainability,
leadership, communication and team building concepts and applications;
climb mountains; descend rivers; rock climb, participate in Adventure-based
Learning (ABL) activities; and plan and run their own expedition.
The second phase kicks off after students arrive
home from Montana – when the group will continue to function
as a cohesive unit. This phase will involve ongoing individual
and group tasks, projects and/or goals developed during the Montana
phase by group members and MYE staff. Based on the strengths,
interests and opportunities for development of group members
and the needs of the MYE Life Skills program, participants will
be accountable to their team for task outcomes. An online or
telephone group will be coordinated by a MYE staff member to
facilitate this process.
What are the differences between the MYE
Leadership Lab and the MYE Wilderness Challenge program?
Workshops teaching theoretical frameworks underpin
field learning
Participants will have increased responsibility
for the implementation and successful outcomes of the program;
and planning/running a multi-day expedition
Students are expected to take leadership roles
in all aspects of the program
Students will be expected to help facilitate group
discussions, actively sharing ideas/perceptions with other
group members
Self and peer feedback will be used in some aspects
of the program
Successful applicants must make a commitment to
be actively involved with the post-summer phase of the program |
